⚬ Description ⚬
This is an archival print of the original collage. Fits standard 11” x 14” frame.
The original piece was cut and pasted by hand from collection of used and vintage books.
As humans, we are always putting things into boxes. It is an effective way to make sense of the world. We also do it with people. With this in mind, the Man Box is a set of beliefs within society that place pressure on men to be a certain way – to be tough; to box any emotions; to be the breadwinner, and to use violence to solve problems. And Bruce Banner is the perfect example of someone in the Man Box.
The child of an abusive father, Bruce Banner grew up introverted, yet a scientific genius. For someone that is very intelligent, he does a good job bottling his anger, pain and sadness up. It is no surprise that sometimes he can get so angry and goes on a rampage. But when he is not, he is socially withdrawn, emotionally reserved. How can you break down those walls down when he had them built so high up for so long?
As much as he is “shy” or he might put on a tough face and try to act like he’s embracing his hulk status as a lone wolf, it seems in many instances he really does care about other people. At the end of the day, we are human and we all have a soft spot in our heart. We just need that one person to see that in us. And for Hulk, that is Betty Ross (symbolized by the dark burgundy flower).
The softer side here is symbolized by the botanical cut outs here. The one leaf was positioned so it blended perfectly with his left chest; the veins and midrib are just like the veins on his muscles. Being both soft and strong is a combination very few have mastered. This collage depicted the beauty of mastering both.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
