⚬ Description ⚬
This is an archival print of the original collage. Fits standard 11” x 14” frame.
The original piece was cut and pasted by hand from collection of used and vintage books.
Similar to Darth Vader, Selina lost her parent at an early age. At the time, she was not given the support and tools necessary to work through her pain. The true tragedy of the loss tends to unfold in layers and come in waves over time. The art is not in the forgetting; it is in the letting go. This collage represents the process of dealing with reawakened grief.
Vader’s mother’s death ignites a strong anger in Anakin, and sets him on the path to becoming Darth Vader. After Anakin lost his mother, he received this first lesson on his path to becoming a Jedi: do not mourn loss. Anakin’s biggest mistake was seeing tragedy or loss as something that could be avoided or fixed, rather than something to be endured or weathered like a storm. If Anakin had been given permission to grieve, he might have done things differently.
There is no right way to grieve and it is a journey that you have to explore. During this journey, your thoughts and emotions could come in waves (symbolized by the wild mushroom with the boat and yacht on it). It sometimes involves exploring your childhood memories (symbolized by the children image at the top of the mushroom). After all, you will find yourself observing these thoughts, similar to standing in front of a giant fish tank in an aquarium, peacefully watching fish swimming pass by. When you can let these thoughts drift by without latching onto them, not trying to suppress them but also not letting them carry you away, that is when you know you truly let go.
